Women’s Voices is a platform for women of Egypt to speak up and be heard. It is an extension of the AMFED Speak Up Egypt project, aimed to spread information about women’s rights across Egypt and for women in the media and civil society to have a space to exchange ideas and express their opinions.
The purpose of this site is to create new space to spread information, expanding on the project activities implemented on the ground in Greater Cairo, Alexandria, Sharqia, Suez, Menya, and Qena and providing extended opportunities for young journalists and civil society activists to explore neglected and controversial women’s issues.
This is based on the strong convictions of the Speak Up Egypt Team that young journalists and activists are the key to creating change in society. These actors must be empowered to expose current issues relating to women in their own communities and pushing the national dialogue on these topics.
The partnership between media and local civil society actors, can enable greater exposure to sensitive and neglected women’s issues such as FGM, domestic violence, and child marriages. This widespread media coverage, through both traditional and social media, has empowered the citizens to have informed discussions to address these issues and benefit Egyptian women. Women’s Voices Egypt is a place to address and cover these issues.
